Common Ozone Treatment Questions

What is Ozone?

Ozone or (O3) is an oxygen molecule which has an additional oxygen molecule loosely attach. This is caused by UV rays from the sun entering our atmosphere. (O3) is also created by man made ozone generators with either UV lights or corona discharge.

How Does Ozone Work?

Because the oxygen molecule is loosely attached it will release from (O2) and attach itself to the pollutant. Now that there is a single oxygen molecule attached to an organic molecule the two will oxidize. This process will continue until the pollutant is gone.

Why shouldn't I Just Buy An Ozone Generator?

Generally the problems people come across are rare and an ozone generator sitting on the shelf is not beneficial, especially with the cost involved. A good ozone generator will cost you around 1,800.00. Smaller ozone generators will not be strong enough to complete an ozone shock treatment which is what is needed to remove smoke and other contaminates. Small ozone generators producing 100 to 1,000 mg/hr cost around 400.00. These companies advertise a 3,000 sqft coverage capability. This is true, the ozone will travel that far but will not be strong enough to remove contaminates.

Will Ozone Cause Damage?

When I integrated ozone treatments into my carpet and air duct cleaning company I did a lot of research. I found data from certified tests conducted by government agencies. In short, the test showed me that I would have to produce 1,000 times more ozone into a home than I do when treating a home to cause oxidization household materials.

How Do Ozone Generators Work?

Our ozone generators, corona discharge type, have a fan, transformers, and ceramic plates. After turning the component on the fan pulls in ambient air. The air then passes by the ceramic plates where corona discharge is occuring. The corona discharge is caused by the transformers increasing normal household voltage on the ceramic plates. As oxygen passes over the plates it is split from (O2) to (O1). The (O1) leaves the generator and then loosely attaches itself to (O2) once again creating (O3). The (O3) then finds organic compounds and begins the oxidation process.

When Can I Re Enter My Home?

Ozone has a half life of a 1/2 hour. This would be correct for one ozone molecule floating in the atmosphere. Conducting an ozone shock treatment is a little different. We will be using high ozone levels for 24 to 48 hours. The home is safe to enter in a couple hours but the ozone smell will be present for 24 to 48 hours after treatment occurs.

Are Ozone Generators Air Filters?

Ozone is not an air filter. To be a purifier or air filter there must be a filter present. Ozone oxidizes contaminates at the source.

Is Ozone Safe?

When conducting ozone treatments no Plants, Pets, or People are to be present. Each of these is alive and requires oxygen to live. Ozone generators in a car or home will convert the oxygen decreasing oxygen levels. Also ozone should not be inhaled for long periods of time. Ozone oxidizes organic materials and it will do the same to mucus membranes causing irritation.

Is Ozone A Pollutant?

The news and weather channels inform the public of Ozone levels which causes a scare. Ozone is our Earth's way of cleansing itself. With that said, hydrocarbons caused by our vehicles enters the atmosphere. Ozone then then attaches itself to the hydrocarbons causing both to fall to human levels. Ozone can be measured easily which is a good indications of pollutant levels.
